I turn 40 on 4/21/08

Posted on: April 18, 2008 10:30 pm

Well I am really having a hard time with this upcoming birthday and need to be slapped around a bit.  It is not the age because I feel young and I am in pretty good shape but the fact that I am leaving the 30's forever freaks the ever loving crap out of me.  I don't want to buy a sports car or date a younger woman (though I wouldn't necessarily be opposed or offended to the latter scenario) I just need some guidance and ideas from others as to how to handle this moment in my life.  Thanks for any input you might have for an "old" man.

You're gonna die anyway just not tomorrow.  Don't do the math and double it or you will get more depressed.  I know a fellow who is 73 has a carbon fibre bike and rides 30-50 miles a day.  He is lucid, happy and healthy.  Take care of yourself now and you will be better off tomorrow.

Ahh forget it Falcon....you re old.

Sorry

Embrace it and have a big party, which is kind of what I did.

Welcome to the middle of life.

Consider it a blessing. After all there are some people who will not get the chance to see 40 or any other ages. Enjoy it and have a Happy Birthday!

I am 11 months behind you, and as well am not quite used to the fact of being over 40. I have started playing touch football in a league in the area and I can tell you my legs sure feel it after. I started a new job in the last month in a completely different field then I have been before. I have a wife ten years younger then myself and have kids 5 and 3. So like they say pretend 40 is the new 30, that saves you 10 years right there..lol. Good luck with the big day.

I know what will pick you up.  You need a Hummer.  Nothing gets a man back on his feet like a Hummer.

And if that doesn't work...get a Corvette.

it's just a number man.  don't fret.  i turn 42 this august and it's no big deal.  only one part of my posse is older, maybe that helps, but it's no biggie.  one strange thing.  i always swore to myself that if i didn't have kids by 39, i wouldn't want any cuz i don't want the child to grow up without me spending lots of time with him.  think about it, he'll be ten and i'll be 50.  he'll want to play ball and i'll be too tired from work.  i am an only child, and my parents were too busy or tired to do things with me.  that sucked, so i didn't want that to happen.  WELL GUESS WHAT?  i have a 16 month old son, and i have no regrets.  he is my life, and i'm not tired.

just suck it in, and enjoy life cuz one of these birthdays will be your last.

I turned 40 in September.  Like you, I was dreading it.  I felt burdened by my job, my beard was graying, and I was out of shape.  In other words, I felt old.

The best way to get past those issues is address them.  I had a big 'ol 40th Birthday party in Las Vegas with my friends (wives included).  It was the best weekend I had had in years.  It got me out of my funk and let me know that I was still as loved by my friends and family despite adding a single digit to my age.

Shortly after I got home, my wife told me she was pregnant.  In a matter of days, I become a father again...this time one in diapers while her big brother goes off to college.  I can't wait for that day.

I've shaved the beard (won't dye my hair), work in the yard, and walk the dog daily.  I feel great.  Emphasis on feel.  I'm not worried about the age.  Its more of a mindset than anything else.

The question you need to ask yourself is "Are you happy?"  Not just your age, but if you were turning 30 or 35, would you be happy?

I turn 40 on 4/21/08

Been there, done that. I turn 43 in July. Your lucky to be in good health. I find that it is much harder to keep weight off. I have had several sports surgeries and they bother me a little, but I am having fun. I don't have to worry about dating having been married for almost 17 years. All my friends are getting older with me, so we still like the same things. Look at the bright side. We got to come up in the mid to late 80's and early ninetys. That was a good time. I wouldn't want to go through the crap that these kids are going to have to deal with. It's already getting tougher with war and the economy. You should be stable at 40. Enjoy it! I do!

I turn 40 on 4/21/08

I haven't ever cared about turning 40 this December. I don't think about it. I never have. I started losing my hair at 19 when I joined the Army. My mom asked me when I was 22 "when was I going to start using Rogaine?" I responded "Never." "You can bury me in my Twins hat." 30 was just a number for me as 40 will be. I don't plan on doing anything for my birthday. I've told my wife and friends the same thing. It's just another birthday to me. 1 day at a time, I'm just glad to be alive.
